Almost a year - a long post to make it up to you
Written at Sunday, November 6, 2011 | back to top

Wow it's almost a year since I've blogged. So damn long. Hahaha. I guess there's not much passion in me to blog for the past year and I've just be extremely lazy. :P (Yes, I am a bad blogger)

So what has happened in the past year? Mainly busy with honours stuff. Lets do a recap.

Started the first semester with a bam! Back in Sydney, rushing up and down to settle down before the semester starts. Not many people left in Sydney and my best friend Candy has graduate :'( So I had to hire a hand to help me shift my stuff from the storage area to my new place in Randwick, Mulwaree apartments to be exact. New place is not so great, much more shoddy compared to Barker apartments. Probably because of the people inside, I do miss my housemates in 3/39 a lot.

Closet with no doors make the place look messier than it actually is

Besides moving, I have also been embarking on a totally new journey from what I have been doing for the previous 3 years of my uni life. For the first semester, I was totally slumped with journal readings (roughly 12 a week), daily assignments - I do mean DAILY, and 3 hour seminars every day. This is something that I am not used to as a commerce student who only has exposure to a fraction of the work all this while. XD
Just half of the readings that I had to do for the first semester

On top of that, I was teaching as a tutor in the university. Doing management accounting (although I do prefer financial accounting LOL). But it was so fun because of the small group of teaching staff which made everything seem so casual and personal - no formalities, nothing. Totally loved it =D So ya, I met my "future" supervisors here as one of them was the LIC of the subject and the other was another tutor.

Finally the first semester nightmare is over. I can tell you, it was seriously not fun! Made me question my decision to do honours countless of times because the workload can just kill you. But once it was over, it's time for the serious part - writing my own thesis.

But before that, I did go on holiday to the Gold Coast to relax, rewind and have fun! Though the fun was only short lived as it ended in 1 week. :(

Welcome to the gold coast - where you should be wearing a bikini instead of a jacket and scarf LOL

After the holiday, fully recharged and ready to roll - I had to get going on my thesis. The process was so painstakingly difficult because once you completed something, you can't just relax and be happy about it, because after submitting to your supervisors you will find yourself back at square one cos you have to amend every thing! So what is my research about you ask?

Basically it's in management accounting but with a psychological twist, i.e., how do small actions affect trust and decisions that can actually influence how relationships are shaped in companies. Sounds pretty cool eh? (I know you don't think so :P). I had to design an experiment to conduct on 3rd year accounting students and due to my own "itchy hand" (or itchy brain), I insisted to run a computer experiment even when my supervisors had no knowledge of computer programming. Haha. So an extra load on my back was to learn up a simple experiment program and created my experiment single-handedly (with some help from Kuan Lung of course).

After completing the experiment, it was time to run it -it took me 3 long weeks to collect data and almost 30% of the data was discarded because the participants were failing some parts of the experiment. =( Running the experiment was quite fun but looking at them failing just two questions made my heart sank to the bottom of the ocean, just like titanic.

In between the experiment sessions, I also had to prepare for a the National Honours Colloquium where I had to present my research topic. It was a daunting experience because all the academics were there and they were looking at you. Luckily my supervisor was there to help me answer the questions. Otherwise, I might have not been able to take the questions which were shot at me. Hahaha.

Just assume that this is the real presentation XD

I also had to recruit participants and arrange a time for them to come to the experiment and also book the computer labs on top of the other stuff mentioned above - and this was a serious nightmare. Some people don't turn up, others got lost and others just turn up really late. Once, I even managed to lock myself out of the computer lab and had to call security to let me in. Phew~

After all that is done, it was time for the write up. If you thought the experiment was bad, this is ten times worse. I hate write ups because again, I had to amend it zillions of times before submission. Re-read the same text for millions of times and still find tonnes of mistakes and deal with what supervisors like to say the "flow" problem. One funny thing though, 10 days before submission, my supervisor actually taught me how to efficiently search for papers using the library website. That was really funny because I had done almost 80% of the work by then and it was so last minute.

In the final week, all I could think about was my thesis, from the second I wake up till the second I fall asleep, everything was about it. I worked from 10am up till 11pm non-stop everyday for the last week. My body ached all over but I just kept on going. In hindsight, I can't even believe I could do that. I remember in my previous 3 years, I could never work more than 2 hours on something without taking a break.

28th October 2011, marked the historical date for all the accounting honours students in UNSW. It was our submission date! Almost everyone came early that day to re-read the thesis for the final time and put on finishing touches to our masterpieces. During all seriousness, the fire alarm went off in the Quadrangle building giving us a 10 minute break from reading. XD Although submission time was at 7pm, we all managed to submit at roughly 4pm. And all was done!

Finally - it is over

I'm glad to say that all of it is done now and I can enjoy my holidays! However, I do have mixed feelings about it, no idea why... I guess if you work really hard at something and suddenly you got nothing to do, it just feels really weird. Hahaha.

So now you know, what my year was like. Sorry for the seriously long post - and to those of you who stuck around till the end of this post. Congrats! I'll reward you with a picture of myself ;)

Written at Saturday, January 15, 2011 | back to top

On my 22nd birthday, which is also one day before my flight back to Kuala Lumpur, I had a full day of activities ahead of me.

The morning was spent packing my stuff into boxes to be shipped to storage on the next morning. In the midst of packing, I decided to go for a BBQ lunch at Kingsford. It's a new shop on the street, which offers a buffet style barbecue for a reasonable price. I think it was roughly $19 for all you can eat.

In the barbecue restaurant. Notice the umbrella beside me.
Yes - It's raining again during by birthday.

The selection of meats and internal organs to be barbecued

After lunch our 2 hour lunch and being stuffed till the maximum, we decided to head home to continue packing our things before we continue our day to our "graduation ceremony:.

At 3.30p.m., I've started putting on make up and dressing up for the event. It's called a "Graduation Sundowner" for graduating international students studying at UNSW. It's the first event of it's kind and we were the first batch to get to experience it. How privileged! :P

Camwhoring in the ASB toilet

At the ASB level 6 lounge with the other international students

While waiting for our graduation photos to be taken, we managed to request the photographer to capture one picture of us together

Finally it's my turn to be a graduate for a few minutes to get my photo snapped

And one more for the two of us together in our gowns!

There were some finger foods served at the event, a live band (which consisted of 1 singer and 1 guitarist) and also some drinks going around - campaign, red wine, beer and orange juice.

We decided to go back home early and headed back at 6.30 p.m.

Had a cake cutting ceremony with my housemates soon after we arrived home

My birthday cake for this year! Looks really good but too sour for my liking. :P

My housemates and me with my birthday cake (except Anoosha who is holding the camera)
Thanks guys for the cake! Really happy to get to celebrate my birthday with you all. Thanks for taking time from your busy schedule. :)

That was how I spent my birthday this year. It was also my 2nd last day and last night in my home for the past 2 and a half years. I'll be missing unit 3 barker lots!

Life after and before Uni
Written at Wednesday, January 12, 2011 | back to top

Dear blog readers,

Sorry for being such a lazy blogger. I have been pretty busy with work. Yes, I have been working. As a vacation trainee in one of the Big 4 audit firms. With this being said, being an auditor gives you very little time to socialize, let alone, blog! So, I am really sorry! :(

I did have a holiday after my exams finished on the 10th of November 2010. Went to Melbourne for a short trip to celebrate the ending of exams with Candy. Will try to blog about that later.

Went back to Malaysia on the 20th of November after packing up and shifting my stuff into the storage area as I am moving from my lovely home in Barker to Mulwaree next year. Rent has skyrocketed so, I've decided to shift. What to do... I'm so poor.

After reaching home, had to go to Penang from the 25th of November up until the 29th. During the trip, I got my hair curled and dyed, which cost me a whooping RM300. I'm not that satisfied with the workmanship done on my hair though, it doesn't look curled at all. But luckily, the colour is ok.

Started work on the 6th of December and have been working like a dog ever since. I can tell you, being an auditor is no fun. Working hours are not stable and will depend on the speed of your work and also the level of co-operation from your clients. I have seniors who work up until 2a.m. on a daily basis, which is kinda sad. I was fortunate enough to work only up until 8.30 p.m. since I started work and not any later than that. :)

So, that explains why I am so tired every day and I only want to sleep!!! Haha. I will write again soon to tell you more about fun stuff instead of boring work. So stay tuned...

Happy Birthday Mummy!
Written at Friday, October 29, 2010 | back to top

Today I dedicate this post to my mum, who is the best mum in the world! =)

Happy Birthday!

Hope you will have a wonderful celebration at the Japanese steamboat restaurant today. So sad that I cannot join you. :-(

I know that no mater how much presents, money and words I give or say, I will never be able to repay your my debt to you. I know that there are many sacrifices that a mother makes for her children and we, as children may never understand. I know you did many things for us since we were born until today and sometimes we repay you by making you upset instead.

For all the mistakes I have made towards you, for all the harsh words and loud tones used against you, I am really sorry.

I do hope that I can make you happy and proud one day though and I will try, because that's the least that I can do.

Thanks for being such a wonderful mum! :-D

Lots of love
from your daughter

Last day of Uni (supposedly)
Written at Friday, October 22, 2010 | back to top

Today marks the last day that I attend classes in my undergraduate degree. 3 years of Uni has passed in a flash. I still remember the first day of classes - rushing to Uni from Malaysia Hall, being all nervous and overwhelmed by the number of lecture theaters on Campus.

My first subject in UNSW was "Legal environment of commerce" which is a business law subject. I remember clearly that I went to the right lecture theater - Biomed D, on upper campus as per my timetable. However, there were less than 20 people in the lecture theater and the lecturer did not show up, even after 30 mins! So, we seriously had the wrong venue printed on the timetable. So we rushed to the right venue - which someone mentioned was the science theater. Following 2 second year students (who actually don't really know the campus THAT well), all of us made our way to middle campus only to get lost! At last, we managed to find the place after looking at maps of the campus and asking around. *phew*. Then another challenge came, how to find seats in the already filled up lecture theater? So we all ended up huddled together, sitting on the stairs till the first break was given. I was so exhausted throughout the lecture that when I finally found a proper seat, I dozed off,  halfway through the 2nd half of the lecture. Such a memorable first day of uni, I don't think I will every forget it. Hahaha.

My very last subject was Management Accounting 2 seminar for honours students. A boring subject and not-so-useful seminar as nothing from the seminar will be tested in the finals. Nonetheless, I still went, and I still read the materials in order not to disappoint the seminar leader - see, what a good student I am, so keen on learning. :P Today also marks the end of my busiest semester throughout the whole course of studies, for once in my degree, I have 16 hours of classes per week instead of the normal 12 hours a week for commerce students (yes, commerce students only have 12 hours a week of classes, don't kill me out of jealousy). However, on top of the 16 hours, I have another 3 hours worth of leading PASS classes. What's PASS?

For those who have no idea what PASS is, it is a Peer Assisted Study Session (PASS) where one PASS leader helps first year undergraduate students to understand certain uni subjects and also adjust to uni life. It's somewhat like coaching/tuition where students can voluntarily come to the classes if they need extra help on certain topics. Okay, so now you have a background on what my "work" encompasses.

The reason why I mentioned PASS is because last Wednesday marked my last day as a PASS leader. Being a PASS leader was really really really rewarding. It made me grow in many ways: I've gained so much more confidence in myself compared to when I first entered Uni, I've learnt how to organize my time effectively between studying, preparing & teaching and I now what it feels like to help someone to finally understand accounting. Not to mention, my wallet has grown a bit too since I've started being a PASS leader. It's a wonderful feeling to be appreciated by people whom you have helped and I also got a round of applause at the end of one of my classes. Boy, that made my day. Hahaha. I guess the first years will never know that they helped me a lot too in classes and for that, I am also grateful to them. :D

However, this may not be the last year for my undergraduate degree. I probably will extend my studies for 1 more year! So be prepared to hear me rant all about my honours year. Haha. But still, after the final exams in November, I can safely say that I have already obtained my degree!

A letter to dad
Written at Thursday, October 14, 2010 | back to top

Dear Daddy,

This post is dedicated to you. I wished I could have told you all these things when you were here with us. Wish I was braver to share my feelings with you. But I guess we shouldn't regret things and I really hope that you knew that I really love and care for you. I hope you are at a better place now. Somehow, I know you are at a happier and healthier there.

I wish I could have done many things to repay you for all the things you have done unselfishly towards me. Although we did not talk that much, I knew that you really cared about us. I hoped that I could give you the things that you wanted in life, bring you happiness and provide for you during old age, just as you did when I was young. But I guess, I will never have the chance to give you all that.

I am happy that I did make you proud as a father. Happy that I could at least give you happiness through studying really hard. I knew you wanted the best for me and thats why you encouraged me to put all my effort into studies. So, I will, I will try to make you even prouder of me. I know, on the day I graduate, you will be with me and I know I will not disappoint you.

I promised you that I will be strong for mummy and chey and I will be. I do miss you and I really wish you could be with us longer to see us progress through life. I know you wanted that too. But I know you need to go to a better place now and I wish you an even happier and better life than the one you have shared with us. I was blessed to have such a good father. And I am thankful to you.

For now, may you rest in peace and may you forever be blessed with good and protected from evil. Take care daddy. You will always be in my memory as the best dad ever.

Your daughter,
Hwei Fern

Bondi times 2
Written at Monday, September 6, 2010 | back to top

Fun day out today to Bondi Junction and Bondi Beach! Went to catch a movie at the Event cinema earlier today and watched "Going the Distance".

Below is a summary for the storyline from IMDb

"Garrett (Justin Long) has always had a problem with commitment and understanding what women want. He seems to be doing everything right until he learns the hard way that he cannot speak the female language when his girlfriend drops him. That night, his friends want to brighten up his spirits by taking him to a bar. He meets Erin (Drew Barrymore) playing a game and ends up buying her a beer, then winning at bar trivia, and having breakfast with her the next morning. Erin is only in New York City for the summer, and will be returning to grad school in San Francisco in six weeks. They start a no-strings-attached summer fling relationship that turns into a seriously meaningful love affair. They realized that they were meant for each other, but when Erin returns home, will their love survive the distance, between New York City and San Francisco? Douglas Young (the-movie-guy)"

The show is HILARIOUS - couldn't contain my laughter at some parts even though there were only 5 of us (4 strangers besides me) in the cinema. All of us burst out laughing during some of the funny scenes. However, the show doesn't really depict much about LDR. But I could relate to some parts on some level. :D

Continued my day out to Bondi Beach to have a taste of "fried mars bar" and "chiko roll". For those of you who doesn't know what the hell is chiko roll (I didn't either until I watched Master Chef Australia season 2) it's an Australian food icon.

Deep fried - calorie rich - Mars bar coated in icing sugar

Half eaten

Chiko roll - looks like a dog bone

Half eaten chiko roll

The verdict: The Mars bar was yummy although really filling and "jelak" after some time while the chiko roll was really nothing to shout about as it tasted awfully bland.

The rest of the day was spent walking around the beach and playing with sand. Met a gay guy today because he asked me to take a picture of him with the beach but then proceeded to show me his other pictures of him wearing a bra and g-string, so I quickly excused myself as soon a possible. Not that I have anything against gays but that was just plain awkward. Heck, he even told me that he wears a g-string to the beach. :S

Me and Candy

Happy mid-semester break!
