Being behind the counter for almost 1 year now, I've met more than a hundred types of customers. Sometimes by even looking at their face from the back of the shop, I would know what would they like to order. However, they on the other hand, will never know what we as the worker or the other side are thinking. Hehe. So, this is an insight on what the person at the cash register is thinking and what you should do to be a well mannered customer.
1. When the person is not at the counter, he or she is probably really busy at the back and is not being a lazy bum. Please be considerate and be patient. I once cut myself and knocked my self for a zillion times because I was rushing with the stock items at the back as the customer shouted impatiently.
2. Please do not show a black face when you are at the counter even though you're having a bad day. Bear in mind, the person serving you has feelings too and may be in a worse situation than you.
3. Do not stare at the person doing their job - like making drinks or preparing your food. You know, it's difficult to work when someone is breathing down your neck the whole time.
4. Don't be rude to the person serving you. Although it's their job to get things done the way you want, we are all humans and we do make mistakes. Forgive the person and try to be nice about things. You know, a leaky cup isn't the end of the world, you don't need to make a big fuss about it.
5. When someone asks you a question, please do not ignore the person. It feels as though I'm crazy and talking to air... I find this more common with people with Asian backgrounds - no offence. Just say no thanks or smile at least when you don't want to stop by.
6. Be clear when making your order, you don't want to blame others for your mistakes. I know the policy is that the customer is always right, but if it's really not my fault, I'll be cursing you beneath my smile. :D Hahaha.. *evil laugh*
7. When the shop is really busy, be patient, we are trying our best to work as fast as we can.
8. Please don't stop by the shop and not order anything or take a really really really long time to decide what to order. It puts us is a really difficult situation because sometimes there is a million other things to do besides waiting for you to decide what to get. If we offer you help, just accept it instead of ignoring me - refer to point no. 5.
9. Remember, sometimes our job requires more than standing around the counter and giving you the things you order. For instance, I have to replenish the items, cut tonnes of fruits, wash lots of stuff, cook, perform daily stock takes, prepare change, count the sales, key in data... and the list goes on.
So be considerate when you are at the counter the next time. Remember, we are humans too, we are not some low-life person that you can bully and step on and we have feelings too.
