Spotted a Whale at Maroubra Beach!
Written at Friday, November 27, 2009 | back to top

18th July 2009

It was a bright and sunny day on that fine Saturday morning and we were free and easy to do anything we like. As usual, I woke up early (for me it's early) at 8.30 am because my biological clock doesn't allow me to wake up any later than that already.

Made breakfast for the day and set the breakfast down at the coffee table in our Boronia St unit and proceeded to wake Kuan Lung up to join me for breakfast. See, what a good gf I am. Hahaha :P

English Muffins for breakfast
(it's actually the next day's breakfast but almost the same la)

Got ready for our next destination after breakfast and decided to go to the Entertainment Quarter at Moore Park. We actually planned to go there for weeks already but didn't get a chance to fulfill our wish. So we grabbed this opportunity to make our way there.

Arrived there at roughly 10 am after dilly dallying to get ready and stuff. And was surprised by the amount of Caucasians there. Throughout our whole time there, we only saw 5 people who are not Caucasians I think! So, if you really want a feel of being in "Australia" with all the blond hair people walking around, I highly recommend EQ. There's a market there where you can get all sorts of food - ranging from snow cones to cheeses to marshmallows.

There was also a skating rink set up nearby the market and a tight rope walking thingy as well. Along with rows and rows of shops. Don't be surprised to find an IMAX and bowling center there too! It's more family oriented cos parents bring their children there to chill for the weekend I guess.

At the film school located in Entertainment Quarter, YES, it is IN EQ, cool right?

So we walked around EQ till roughly 1 o'clock because there was not really much to do there anyway. But we did get a few food stuff like a 2 liter bottle of apple juice which is really delicious and some French baked breads.

We didn't know what to do for the afternoon so we just went to Maroubra again because I think Kuan Lung fell in love with that place already after the first visit. Hahaha. Seems that he's a beach person - but I'm not that enthusiastic about going to beaches, no idea why though.

This time he went to the beach seeking for "adventure" I guess. So we went to climb on the nearby cliffs. He went down the cliffs to snap a few pictures while I chicken out and stayed on top to wait for him. I am somehow afraid of the waves hitting the rocks on the beach. Looks damn scary to me.

See, brave person will stand near the water during high tide
And coward? stand high up where it's safe

His photography skill of the waves

Another shot near a cliff... so near the water

Then we proceeded to walk towards Coogee beach because he wanted to do the Coastal Walk again! At first I thought he was kidding but it seems that he was not.... =.=" So I just said it was okay to walk to Coogee but no further.

On the way we saw a few people with binoculars looking out towards the sea. At first I didn't know what they were actually looking at cos all I saw was sea foam. But a lady was kind enough to borrow her binoculars to us and we got to see a whale! I only got a glimpse of it before it disappeared into the waters. It's not  the whales with the blow holes so there was no water splashing around. They speculated that it was a baby whale.

everyone anticipating for another "grand entrance"

After trying to follow it for quite a while, we gave up after the second sighting of the whale. And continued our walk. It was getting dark cos it was already nearly 5 pm. After walking for a bit, the path ended and there were stairs leading down to a rocky area near the sea.

I don't know why, but Kuan Lung was so confident that it was still the coastal walk path so we continued walking until we reached something like mountain thing made up by small boulders. He insisted we climb the rocks cos we saw a stairs up there but after halfway of climbing we found out that the stairway was blocked.

No chance of turning back because the tide was increasing and the rocky area that we passed was already quite wet. So decided to proceed forward after seeing a jogger run through a cliff area thing. However, when we reached the cliff area place, it was totally submerge in water. I thought I was going to die there cos I was really afraid of the tide...

Once the water start to reside, Kuan Lung jumped down the cliff and ran to the other side and quickly climbed up and abandoned me!!! Evil guy.... But luckily he came back down and coaxed me to go to the other side after the tide resided for the 2nd time, but I wasn't lucky enough and my shoes and jeans got soaked up till half way to my knees... Sigh....  Refer to my illustration (more like ugly paint drawing) if you don't get what I mean.

Why you abandon me? :'(

Too scared at this moment - I actually thought I was gonna be stuck there till the waves swallow me

Managed to gather enough courage to run across once the tide went down
But at a price :P

I got quite pissed and forced him to walk back to the main road and catch the bus back home. Hahaha. We HAD a weekly travel pass anyways. *By the way, I was not wearing a red skirt on that day, the "illustration" was just so you can differentiate who is who. LOL.. I know my drawing damn ugly*

After arriving home and showering, it was time for dinner and I had to quickly prepare everything cos our house mate was hosting a dinner for his friends. Due to the rush, he tried to help us to cut the corn for my soup and ended up cutting his finger... Made me feel so bad... But luckily we managed to cook everything quickly and had our dinner and retire to the room soon after.
