Botanical Garden and Government House
Written at Wednesday, September 2, 2009 | back to top

Continuing on my holiday posts, we went to the Royal Botanical Gardens on a fine sunny day. Actually we were planning to visit the opera house for a while and maybe join the tour but I was against that idea because I felt that I would not be able to appreciate the wonders of the opera house. So off we went from the lobby of the world famous iconic building, to the botanical gardens carrying a cup of Guylian dark hot chocolate. I was sick at that time so couldn't really taste the chocolate – Kuan Lung drank most of it anyway.

Somehow, I like this picture but too bad his eyes are closed

We wanted to join the tour at the gardens but we missed because we arrived a bit late due to Kuan Lung's inquisitive nature and eye for detail. He just loves to look at things for a long period of time which sometimes make me quite impatient :P. Because we missed the tour, we just decided to trot off by ourselves to discover the names of overgrown trees and venture into a small patch of bamboos.
After 10 minutes of exploring, we stumbled across a sign saying "Government House" and got very excited. So we quickened our pace but after walking for 15 minutes, still could not find the entrance! So, what to do, we slow down and enjoy the scene instead….

At last, we found the entrance at the end of the long row of gates. Checked out the time for the next tour and booked ourselves for the FREE 11.30 a.m. tour. The time was only 11 o'clock so we just hung out around the house snapping pictures here and there and trying to decipher the sundial, which we failed to do so.

At 11.30 sharp, the tour guide came out to greet us and told us about the history of the House and its present use. It's still used to entertain the guests of the current governor from time to time and If I'm not mistaken, it's only open to the public on Monday to Thursday. The tour was intriguing because I love to listen to stories about the olden times. However, some people find the tour really dull and strongly advice against joining the tour.
After the tour, we just continued walking around the garden for an additional half an hour or so and suddenly we saw a cute sight. Ducklings and their mother duck! This all thanks to Kuan Lung's curiosity because he pressured me into going to the pond.

Cute cute ducklings!

I was rushing for time so we left the area after our duck adventure and Kuan Lung ended up giving me a black face for the whole day because I had to cut shot his expedition. I needed to go to the market and it was getting quite late already. Reach Paddy's at 3 p.m. and our day out ends with marketing for goodies.
