Addicted to SDO-X
Written at Wednesday, March 18, 2009 | back to top

Have you ever heard about O2Jam and SDO? I used to be an addict of O2Jam back in my INTEC days (2006-07). However, now I'm totally hooked on SDO-X (or XDO) which is a newer version of SDO.

O2Jam was basically based on music where you had to press certain keys on the keyboard to generate sounds that compliment the given background music. So when you missed a note or hit the key at the wrong time, the whole song sounds a bit funny. However, XDO is based on dance moves rather than on music. Hence, even though you pressed the wrong key at the wrong time, the music still goes on but your avatar will stop dancing. And yes, there's a little avatar of you who will dance according to the music and of course to your skills.

I got caught up in the whole XDO frenzy after I came back from Penang. My cousins were playing the game (they're around 13-14 years old) and I transferred the game over to my computer. And since then, I can't help myself from playing!

The game is Malaysian based (but there's also another one based in China/Taiwan) and they make profit by selling credit in convenience stores (such as 7-11) to allow players to shop for their avatar. So basically, the game is free if you don't want to buy stuff.

See, it says "Malaysian". I support buatan Malaysia even though I'm in Sydney now!

So after clicking start, a login page will appear and then you'll have to select a specific server (they refer it to beach... I wonder why) to play in. After that, you can choose to create your own room or even join others in their room in order to play. Hmmm.. sounds kind of obscene but anyways....

The leng lui which is waving is me! And you can see the rooms listed in
the middle of the screen while other functions such as shopping are at the right side of the screen.

After entering the room, you'll actually notice that you're in some kind of a lounge where you wait for other players to join in. You can even walk around in the room and talk to others. There's even an action function where your avatar will move in a specific way when you type specific words. It's really cute. :-D

Isn't the concept nice? You can even have a lounge t
o wait for fellow players to join... Such a realistic game

To select songs and change the mode of your game, you'll have to click on the "settings" button and something like this will pop up:

The mode, dance and background selection is on
the left while songs are on the right.

As you can see, there's many new songs that you can listen to while playing the game. There's lots of Chinese songs (ranging from Jay Chow's to Cindy Wang's songs) to choose from. However, there's also some Malay (yes, MALAY), Korean, Japanese and not to forget, English songs too!

After selecting the song, mode, background and formation of your dance moves, you can proceed to play the game. You can even vary the speed of the notes to suit your preference and also choose to play in teams (this can be done in the lounge area).

The next thing you'll have to do after going though so many procedures, is to press "start" if you're the host of the room or "ready" when you're joining others. And let the game begin!

Hahaha, perfect dance move! Too bad I captured the screen when
her eyes were closed so she looks a bit weird.

As I've mentioned earlier, there's so many modes to choose from. There's a drum mode (where there's only 2 keys to press), reverse note mode, showtime mode and battle mode (where you can disturb other players dance sequence). Heck, there's even Lover mode and Boys vs Girls mode. These are just some of the modes that are in the game... I haven't covered all of them.

For those who are curios what "lover mode" is all about, you basically have to partner with a avatar of the opposite sex (too bad for gays, they don't allow the avatar to be of same gender!) and your points will be accumulated as pairs at the end of the day. The "lovers" with the highest marks wins the game!

Too bad it's not my boy whom i'm dancing with.
I'm not having an affair ok!!! *sniggers*

For boys vs girls mode, it's like the battle of the sexes where a girl and a guy will dance to see who's the better dancer while the others watch. The players will take turns to dance.

Only the guy in the blue ring and the girl in the orange ring are dancing while we watch them battle. I'm considered lousy in this lot of pro players.

In the end, the team with the lowest points (either the girl's or the boy's team) will have to face a punishment. The punishment will be to dress up in some kind of a "humiliating" suit. For example:

See! I ended up losing and becoming a joker!!!

Another punishment is to become chickens... There's also one which
turns you into ultraman/ultrawoman. How cool is that?

I know I'm too old for this kind of game (20 years old already but still playing a teenager game?), but it is addictive! And I'm not ashamed to admit that I am fan of XDO! :-P Plus, I feel like I'm doing some kind of advertorial for them... But actually I just want to share my interests with you guys.
