After hearing from Zhi Bin during Sheng Yu’s birthday, Kuan Lung and I decided to take the coastal walk from Coogee to Bondi.
But due to his attitude of “nanti-nanti” we reached Coogee beach at around 3.30. After detouring to the baths at Coogee and paying respect to the dead in Bali bombing, we start our night coastal walk at 4.15 p.m. witnessing the “sunset” at Coogee (as you know, we can’t really see the sun setting, just the setting becomes darker!).
After 10 minutes walk, we reached to lagoon, where a “no picking shells “sign stood. However, we saw a middle-aged couple pacing up and down the lagoon picking things up. So we went to “bat gua” to see what they are picking up, suspecting that they were breaking the law. To our surprise, they were living around the area and was cleaning up the beach, picking up glass bottle pieces that washed up to the beach from elsewhere.
And after bidding them goodbye, we continue further only to find the usual coastal walk path is under reconstruction, but we still decide to continue the adventure. After roughly an hour, we finally reached Bronte beach, but everything was closed. However one of the kiosks had its gate half closed! Hehe, would be a good starting spot for a burglar don’t you think so?
Now comes the most exciting part of the whole coastal walk – the walk along cemetery. Due to the coastal walk reconstruction, there was a detour right through the MIDDLE of the cemetery. Kuan Lung became so frightened that if not for me, he would walk all the way back to Bronte to avoid that cemetery. Haha, that’s the consequence of playing so many zombie games, he’s afraid that zombies might crawl up from the grave to haunt him. To make matters worse, there were a few joggers on the path as well and the sound of their breathing gave him the creeps.
Although street lights were non-existent in the cemetery, the moonlight was so bright that it managed to illuminate the path so we could see rather clearly.
After 2 and ½ hours, we were finally approaching Bondi beach. Suddenly, emerging from the darkness was an old lady, coming down the stairs. It was too dark to make out whether it was a she or he from afar so I got a bit paranoid. Besides, the fact that she came so close to us did not help ease our feelings at all. Kuan Lung nearly gave the lady a punch! But luckily didn’t, if not I will get sued for inflicting grievous bodily harm.. (Consequences of studying too much legal)
By 6.30, it’s time for dinner. We went to everyone’s recommendation – Hurricane. Since we did not have a reservation, we had to wait for a while for a table. In the meantime, we were attended by a bartender, whom Kuan Lung believed to be “the boss”, haha. We bought 2 drinks for a try. Mine was a non-alcoholic berry smoothie and his, a mixture of Bombay sapphire and mango. After our drinks came, we were taken to a table well secluded in the corner. Our dinner - half a rack of lamb ribs served with unsalted butter, and sirloin. Hurricane even gave us complimentary bread that is toasted to perfection. We also had an entrée before our main course which was 5 scallops mornay.
Well, the ribs was a little bit burnt but I guess that’s Australian style? His verdict – the ribs was a little bit too dry, so the juice was much likely gone. Bread – scrumptious. The scallops were probably the best of the meal, believe it or not!
To our surprise, my housemates, Pom and Kate were there too. And of course, with his sharp eyes, Kuan Lung was the one who spotted them first.
After dinner we just walked around Bondi for a while and bought our very first weekly travelpass to avoid wasting too much money on traveltens. Took the bus from Bondi to Circular Quay but we stopped at Oxford street for a bit just to have a feel of Sydney’s nightlife. Then we continued to Circular Quay and walked around Circular Quay up to the Opera House.
Being such a “smart” girl who rarely traveled into the city eventhough I’ve been here for 1.5 years already, I suggested we take the ferry to Darling Harbour just for a look see. (To exploit the weekly travelpass to it’s maximum capacity) Well, my smart brain thought it was only a 10 min walk from Darling Harbour to Circular Quay… Talk about being so-not-street-savvy.
The ferry ride was thrilling… First we sat outside the ferry and when the wind got too strong we went inside the ferry.. There was also this seagull which was racing the ferry for some reason..
So we reached Darling Harbour and after walking for around 30 mins and grabbing a cup of hazelnut hot chocolate from Lindt café, we decided to head back to Circular Quay. And obviously, after walking to the end of Darling Harbour’s ferry wharf, there was no way we could reach Circular Quay in 10 mins. Hence, we headed back to Darling Harbour and walked all the way to Town Hall and then caught the bus to Circular Quay and the bus back home.
When we reached home, we were dead beat… I think we just went to bed and got up really late the next day with sore feet!
