Who was here?

3 months since...
Written at Wednesday, May 28, 2008 | back to top

It’s been almost 3 months since I first stepped out of Kingsford Smith International Airport. Too many things have happened throughout this short period of time. Feelings intermixed: happy, sad, frustrated, stress, loneliness... and the list goes on. Let me put it into a concise story and bring you on the journey of a thousand experiences (in a short time only haha).

First week in Sydney:

Felt lonely and sad and homesick during this period. Didn’t really know anyone who lives in Sydney at that time (except Ming Shiuan whom was quite far away from where I was living – at that time I didn’t know how to travel yet!).

During this week I was busy with o-week and also searching for a place to stay. Malaysia Hall offered me a place to stay so I reluctantly accept the offer. Explored Randwick (the nearest town here) and also took the bus for the first time.

The bus system is so different from Malaysia. There are timetables erected to inform what times the buses would arrive at every bus stop and the busses normally come during that specified time (but there was once it was really late). Quite impressive but the fares here are too expensive and there are a lot of busses which requires prepaid passes.

O-week was kind of fun and tiring too. It seems that the Australians are very generous in giving free stuff during this time.

Second Week and Third Week:

Lessons start and got the hang of going from one end to the other end of campus. I got lost several times trying to find the right lecture theatres and also tutorial classes. But overall, I managed to get to classes on time. Made some of new friends from all around the world.. haha, not really. Currently I have friends from Sri Langka, Shanghai, Australia (ABCs), Hong Kong, Thailand and some other acquaintances.

Lessons are okay, but the problem is we have to print out all our lecture notes before hand and it’s just so time consuming and also takes up a lot of my $$$ (ink and paper – and yes I’ve bought a printer). Lecturers just speed through the lessons and tutors just gives the answers. Sometimes, I don’t know why do I even attend to classes when I just can get everything online. This is because my university posts up everything, including quizzes and assignments online!

People in Malaysia usually say lectures are not as important as tutorials but I feel it’s the other way around (except for my Legal tutorial though). I personally feel lectures are more informative although the lecturers tend to be noisier and harder to ask questions.

Fourth Week:

Went to Taronga Zoo this week and also Nan Tien Temple in Wollongong because it was Easter break!

Taronga Zoo was big but it was undergoing major renovations at that time so many places were closed. I missed all the shows! Haha. But overall it was ok. The animals are very well fed compared to Zoo Negara in Malaysia. There were also way more animals in Taronga.

Nan Tien Temple was like a money making place compared to some spiritual place. Everything needs money! I mean it’s not asking for donation, it’s asking you to pay $20 for a few joss sticks and fruits. And there weren’t places to worship. I prefer the temples in Malaysia. No offence though to the devotees of Nan Tien. It’s just my personal opinion.

I stayed with Ming Shiuan during the time we traveled to both places because we traveled together with another 3 guys as “bodyguards” haha, just kidding!

Fifth Week onwards…

Life started to be really hectic after the holidays, assignments, mid semester exams, quizzes, presentations, etc… Really stressful. I didn’t even have time for myself. All I did during that time was to study and to chat online and also shop in Randwick once in a while during weekends.

But I did visit Ming Shiuan for a few times and we had fun cooking and eating our very much missed Malaysian food. We cooked spaghetti bolognaise, bak kut teh, herbal soup, and many other nice food. J

However, life at Malaysia hall gets more and more mah fan by the day, it’s like living in a community which looks at you all the time and gossips behind your back. And I feel kinda lonely here and I usually eat alone. But I did make a lot of friends here at Malaysia hall too. But I’m not very close with the majority of the residents here.

There was also an activity last Saturday: “Malaysia Hall Open Day”. I was chosen to be Ketua bahagian Kewangan, so you can imagine me designing, stamping, cutting, stapler-ing, numbering and selling the coupons! And also not forgetting to mention counting $$$. I was lucky to have some of my AJKs cooperating with me really well. Thanks so much! Overall I felt like it was an okay event but not worth for the small amount of money generated for such a tiring event, we only got $800 of profit.

Well, finals are coming up soon. I’ve done all my other assessments, so there’s no excuse for not studying and concentrating on my finals! I cant wait till winter break!

Oh yea, I forgot to mention that I ate Crocodile and Kangaroo meat yesterday! Haha, can you believe it? But the crocodile meat was in sausage form. They don’t really taste that good though.

Ok, that’s enough for now. I should upload some photos... which I would do soon!
